About

happy about harry 3 jun 07 sm

After 17 years in community relations, strategic communications, and community development with both the business sector and not-for profit organizations, I now consult with grassroots organizations to help build stronger communities.

My passion lies in capacity building; encouraging community members to share their voice, to engage in the care & concern for others, and to take responsibility for food security and environmental sustainability.

I was raised on Haida Gwaii which truly helped shape the person I am today.  A return trip for work a number of years later reintroduced me to the many beautiful elements of spirit, environment, and culture to be found there, but at times the wounds caused by neglect and apathy in those very areas were difficult to face.  That experience led me to the University of Waterloo where I studied Social Development, and ultimately to where I am today; primarily as a learner, and hopefully now and again as a teacher.

I currently live in Vancouver’s West End with my two hairy children.  They are the boss of me.

A Note About Comments:

While I can sometimes be a bit cheeky, I don’t dish what I can’t take.  If you have comments or criticisms, I look forward to the discussion.  If you are abusive, consider yourself punted.

Hey Joey!
The Ning site is sloooooow when I’m working full time and trying to find my way around widgets and such…I’ll get there!
I’m bringing my daughter to Vancouver during Christmas 2011 – we must catch up!
Have you had much to do with Berkhana Institute? I think you would love them if you don’t already!
My work email is Dee.Brooks@newcastle.edu.au if you ever want to chat!
